Analogue or Digital - What's the difference.

All DPChip modules contain a digital microprocessor. This 'chip' intercepts the fuel and timing signals being sent from the ECU to the fuel injection system and digitises the signal (i.e. converts it to a number). It then uses this converted value to 'look up' the new output signal value from the pre-programmed fuel/timing map inside the DPChip, which is based on the fuel/timing map from the original ECU. The optimised output value is then converted back to an analogue signal, which is then fed in real-time to the fuel injection system. All analogue boxes on the other hand contain primative electronics which manipulate the control signals by multiplying the analogue signal by a certain analogue value. The digital method can thus be tailored exactly to meet the engines requirements at all rpms throughout the rev range. The analogue unit's are not as acurate in delivery of power and torque. View the analogue/digital fuel map graph at the bottom of this page for further information.

DID YOU KNOW?

German engineer Dr. Rudolf Diesel patented the diesel engine in 1893. He developed his first working model in 1897, a four-ton, 20-horsepower engine. Early diesel engines were used primarily in large ships and submarines due to their large size, but by the 1920s, they were being used in tractors, medium-duty trucks and buses.

Digital Diesel Tuning

Is accomplished by means of a modern microprocessor with an extremely high degree of accuracy.

On the basis of a manufactures standard fuel/timing map the intelligently programmed management of the Diesel Power Chip control unit sends the modified data to the injection system, which then meters the exact diesel quantity and timing for extra performance.

Digital Benefits

  • Easy to install. No adjustments necessary.
  • Always an optimum calculated increase of the diesel fuel injection quantity and timing together with the function of the factory set fuel injection map.
  • Optimum utilisation of the engines reserve capacity from the manufacturer (35% power and torque increase).
Digital Drawbacks
  • None known

Analogue Diesel Tuning

Is accomplished, as a rule, by minimal electronics.
These devices usually have no engine or vehicle specific fuel map, but are equipped only with a basic electronics that manipulates the control signals sent to the injection pump. Used as a general power adjustment across the whole rev range.

Analogue Benefits

  • Will improve overall power and response.

Analogue Drawbacks

  • Labour intensive and time consuming.
  • Manual and therefore inaccurate adjustment.
  • If not adjusted correctly, too high an injection quantity in certain sub ranges (heavy acceleration) leading to increased fuel consumption and smoke emission.
  • Almost always requires extensive readjustment.

Intelligent Diesel Tuning

The graph (highly simplified) below illustrates the difference between Analogue and Digital diesel tuning. The green area over the standard fuel map represents the optimised range of the DPChip control unit
The red area represents the manually and hence inaccurately adjusted range of an analogue box.The graph clearly shows the superiority of the digital DPChip unit over the analogue diesel boxes and the DPChip's much higher efficiency due to the fact it does not stress the engine and therefore does not reduce the lifetime of the engine. Genreally analogue diesel boxes cannot be optimally adjusted throughout the total range. They are usually adjusted too rich in sub ranges. The engines consume too much fuel and emit un-burnt diesel resulting in large clouds of black smoke while accelerating.
